To the bank.

Please recommend a public-transit accessible bank (or credit union referral) that does not require minimum balances in the SF Bay Area.

Do you love your bank? I'm looking for a brick-and-mortar bank in the Bay Area (or East Bay) that does not require a minimum balance for its free checking accounts. Although I've been looking to open a checking account with a new bank, I can't seem to find any that don't have minimum balance requirements (or ones that will instate them in the near future). Perhaps checking accounts without minimum balance requirements no longer exist where I live. Bankrate dot com hasn't offered up too much, and really I'm now just looking for person-to-person recommendations.

Do you like your current bank? Would you mind recommending any? Thank you!

A friend of mine uses Redwood Credit Union and they offer free checking. It's on Market street near Civic Center so it's easily accessible by public transportation via bus, muni metro, trolley and BART.

Patelco Credit Union offers a free checking account with no minimum balance requirements and they have several transit-accessible locations in SF and the East Bay.

Often checking accounts will be free if you make a sufficient quantity of direct deposit each month to them instead of a minimum balance. This may not be applicable to your situation but I thought I would let you know just in case.

I super-duper love my bank the Mechanics Bank. There are different options for avoiding monthly fees or having a minimum balance. I just have direct deposit so I don't have to worry about any of that stuff. If you get the Smart & Easy checking account they not only don't charge you for using other banks ATMs, but they repay you ATM fees monthly! And they're super nice!

I've heard really amazing things about the SF Fire Credit Union. I'm waiting to move back to the city so I can open an account.

No minimum fees!
