Getting a blood test in NJ?

I'm just looking to get my cholesterol levels checked. I've never really had a doctor, only a pediatrician when I was very very young. I don't have insurance either. I can't do the online blood tests as there is a law against those in NJ/NY.

How do I go about getting a simple blood test? Do I really need to spend the time/money finding a doctor first to prescribe this?

Free fingertip-based cholesterol testing (including LDL, HDL and triglycerides) is routinely done at health fairs, and those are frequent in NYC and major NJ cities. Google for upcoming health fairs that offer cholesterol testing, if A) the need isn't urgent and B) the absolute highest accuracy isn't urgent (since finger-prick tests are generally less accurate than blood draw tests). (And if either A or B *is* urgent, or you need a doctor to interpret your results or help you, google for health clinics.)

The drug store suggestion is a good one, but if you do end up needing anything more exotic there are urgent care centers throughout NJ with a range of prices (call before to figure it out).
