Why won't my iRiver show up on the desktop?

I'm having problems mounting my iRiver on the (G4 iBook, OS 10.3.9) desktop.
Basically, the deal is this: in a rush one morning, I hauled my iRiver (HP340) out of the dock whilst it was still hooked up to my computer. I got the standard warning on the computer about ejecting the disk and possibly losing what was on the iRiver's hard drive. Everything's still there, but now, every time I try to connect it to the computer, the computer won't recognise it. When connected to the computer (via the standard USB connection) the iRiver itself claims it's connected, but I can't for the life of me get my iBook to acknowledge that it's actually there.
So what do I do? Being a novice in geek terms, is there any way I can force mount the disk from the terminal window? Or am I just, well, screwed?

Response by poster: Tried restarting; made no difference. When connected, the ls /Volumes/ command just list's my computer's hard drive, and nowt else ...

Try disconnecting your iRiver, then reboot your G4, perform a hard reset on your iRiver, then re-connect it to your Mac.

Response by poster: mds35, I'd do that, but I'm extremely wary of doing so. I know that the hard reset shouldn't clear anything on the iRiver's HD, but I have audio files on there I need for work. I'll have to get them off there first, but I'll do that then give the hard reset a go. Cheers for the advice.

Second: When it's connected, what happens if you type
ls /Volumes/
in the terminal? Does the iRiver's name appear?
