Covered knees at the Vatican

Can I wear a knee-length dress with opaque tights to St. Peter's in the Vatican?

From what I'm reading, they're very strict on the no visible knees or shoulders dress code, but would my knees be considered to be covered if I'm wearing opaque black tights? I'd be wearing a dress that very nearly covers my knees anyway, but wouldn't want to push it.

From my experience there, if it's a judgement call where they can be conservative or liberal, they go conservative. They gave my girlfriend a light paper dress-like thingy to cover up, which she did not like at all. YMMV.

Best answer: I wore completely opaque tights with a knee-length dress and was fine. No one said anything to me.

Enjoy St. Peter's - it's beautiful!

Best answer: I wore a dress with a full skirt that hit just above the knee and no tights at all. No one blinked at me. The impression I got was that they were more interested in making sure expanses of thigh and shoulders were covered.

Best answer: Just having a reasonable dress on (that's not really short or like a miniskirt) should be sufficient. The tights are a guarantee, though. Have fun!

I was at St. Peter's near Easter this year (I did not actually go into the church, but to the Vatican Museum and in the Square). There were thousands of Italian and foreign visitors, including teenagers, and I didn't notice their conforming to any particular dress code. It was quite warm weather and people were dressed for that.

The priests and nuns, that's another story.

Summers can be brutal in Mediterranean Europe, and it makes sense to dress comfortably for the weather when traveling there. What I do is pack a pair of long pants in my backpack to put on before going into churches. You might want to carry around a full-length skirt and slip it on before going. That way you don't have to worry about whether the shorter skirt is going to be a problem.

You are fine as long as your thighs and shoulders are covered. I wouldn't put tights on if it's spring or summer. Too hot.

you could pack a pair of capri leggings to pop on under your skirt--they'll roll up small in the bag, and double as hotel loungewear and/or outdoor-adventure wear.
