Sculptor making jewelry seeks advice

I am working on a jewelry line this summer and I'm wondering if anyone could share resources on the next steps after design and sample fabrication. Unfortunately, I work in a completely different field (sculpture) and don't know the ins and outs of the fashion biz.

Luckily, I live in NYC so I'm in a good spot for fashion! I'm excited about the quality of the work and aiming for a different market than street fairs or Etsy (both of which I love dearly, but the pieces are in at a higher price point than what is average in those venues). I don't have the slightest idea where to look for a rep, or who to approach, or how to get started with getting the line out there.

So my questions are:

Anyone have pointers on where to find a rep with F/W collection of 30 pieces?
Any pitfalls to avoid?
How many collection samples should I fabricate, where can physically I show them?
Is it ok to personally approach shops that have my aesthetic with a lookbook, or do most of them deal only with reps?

Thanks for any advice!

Best answer: Try the MJSA (Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America). Attend some of their shows, and network. Providence and Warwick RI remain principal centers for jewelry design and manufacture in the U.S., and you can find a ton of resources by visiting manufacturers in that area.

It helps to know how you pieces will be manufactured, in order to avoid design problems that drive up cost and lower yield in manufacturing.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but most better retail jewelers work with established manufacturers on terms. Unless you can offer competitive terms yourself, and commitments on delivery of orders, you may have problems getting time in front of buyers.
