What is Johnny Cash wearing in this video?

It seems like nothing else than a mock turtleneck shirt with linked cuffs. I've never seen anything like that. You can see it here too.

Can you confirm that you see that, too? Does that style of shirt have a name? If it helps the performance is dated 1968,

It looks like a dress shirt with a Mandarin collar. Mandarin collars are a feature of nehru jackets, which were fashionable in the late 1960's after the Beatles wore them regularly.

Best answer: He's wearing a turtleneck. "formal" turtlenecks were a fad in the late 60s, early 70s.

Here's a photo of him wearing a white turtleneck in 1968, so you can see it better.

I can confirm that I see it too. That's very weird. I would almost imagine a turtleneck vest thingy over a dress shirt, just for tv. But it's weird.

Best answer: American Costume 1915-1970 by Shirley Miles O'Donnol confirms what Ideefixe says:

"In 1967 and 1968 there was a brief fad for wearing very elegant turtleneck evening shirts of silk or nylon knit, especially made with French cuffs, for formal dress affairs."

Response by poster: Fascinating. Cuff-linked turtlenecks, I never would have thought of that!

You can see it even better here.

Counterculture influences on fashion. This was a less audacious take on the Nehru jacket, which came to prominence in 1966. It's all down to the Mods and their experimentation with traditional dress forms.
