Something to do in Georgia

Things to do, places to see in somewhat rural GA for the next two weeks?

I'm in the Hiram, Georgia area for the next few days. I've run out of things to do and places to see. I've a car and (sometimes) responsibility for teenagers. Any recommendations would be welcome!

Hike Kennesaw Mountain? Caveat: not if it's 90 degrees out and super humid.

I live in the next town over from there. You can go for a walk on the Silver Comet trail - early in the morning it's VERY pretty.

Also, if it's too hot/humid for outdoorsy stuff, you can always spend a few hours at Stars and Strikes.

Also in Kennesaw area (35 minutes or so from Hiram):

This is close to my old hometown! I'm sorry, Hiram itself is kind of dull; however, there are things to do if you want to drive a bit. You could go to Six Flags Over Georgia or White Water. If you want to drive to Marietta (30 minute drive), you could go to the cute and historic Marietta Square or have lunch at The Big Chicken, which is just a regular KFC with a crazy landmark on top. And, of course, you are pretty close to Atlanta with all the fun things to do there, as well.

(heh, just saw the Powder Springs tags. I never thought I'd see my little flyspeck of a town with a tag on here.)

You're from Powder Springs, deadmessenger? I'm from there, too! I live in Tennessee now, but I miss small-town Georgia sometimes. Although it's hard to think of activities for who squared to do, I wasn't bored there very often as a teenager. There was always something to do, even if it mostly consisted of going to the Waffle House or the library or the pool.

I highly recommend the food at Gumbeaux's in Douglasville, which is about a 15 minute drive south of Hiram.

Oh this, THIS, a thousand times THIS. Gumbeaux's is the best Cajun food I've ever had, outside Louisiana itself or course.

(and zoetrope, you've got memail)

You're in luck! This weekend there is a big [snort] microcar rally at the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum in Madison, GA. Madison is about two hours east of Hiram on I-20.

Response by poster: I haven't been to Gumbeaux in years. Might be worth the return visit (although it wasn't nearly hot enough for my taste buds).

Thanks for the information, everyone.

If you don't mind the drive, you could go see the Georgia Guidestones, over in Elbert County, on the east edge of the state. On the way there, or back, you could visit scenic Tallulah Gorge, and/or Amicalola Falls.

Y'know, Gumbeaux's is a fresh food mom n' pop enough place that I bet they would hot it up for you if you asked.
