Tracking sales referrals for the long-term?

I am working out a standard operating procedure/system for a referral marketing program with a partner firm and seeking a useful web-based or software system to track signposted, offline referrals. We are thinking of using a discount code or something along those lines but I am dealing with some distrust from my partner about how we reliably continue to track referrals through the lifetime of the sales relationship. Is this going to be based on trust or are there electronic or other systems I should be looking into?

Best answer: Use a database to generate reports? This question seems answerable with a straightforward database query.

Response by poster: Should we be asking the company we make referrals to for a database query every quarter to quantify referral sales activity?
