Moving from the cool aunt to the coolest aunt ever

Help me introduce my aunt to good music she's never heard.

You and I may disagree on what 'good' entails, but I recently found out that my cousins introduced my aunt to Regina Spektor (Us) and Cake (Short Skirt / Long Jacket), which she liked. I approve of her liking these songs, and I told her I would make her a mix cd with other things she might like.

Without question, I am including some songs from Ani DiFranco (everyone must love Living in Clip), Tori Amos, Spoon, Stars, and Death Cab / Postal Service.

Given the constraints of what she might like, what are some great bands am I missing? Or what particular songs that should be included from the bands I mentioned?

Your aunt may enjoy the lyrical complexity of The Weakerthans or The Mountain Goats.

The Decemberists are always a great idea.

Losta good stuff above.

How about Fleet Foxes, Iron & Wine, Joel Plaskett, Phoenix, Sufjan Stevens, The Wailing Jennys, or Vampire Weekend?

Bon Iver, Yael Naim, Ingrid Michaelson.. someone mentioned Phoenix, which I highly recommend. If you enjoy Phoenix I would suggest Passion Pit and Spoon. All three of those bands toured together last year. Mountain Goats are amazing.

You can always suggest Pandora or Grooveshark, which are great internet music streamers. What I love about pandora is that you can type a song or artist in and just go on a music tangent for hours. Grooveshark works a bit different, you pick the songs you want to hear and it will play them in the order you choose. One I guess is more for music exploration and the other for playing what you know you want to hear.

Enjoy.

All great suggestions. I'd just like to add Mumford & Sons, for some twangy folk rock.
