Keep the roof over my head, please!

Can anyone recommend a good builder in or around the Beeston area of Nottingham, UK? I've had some minor roof damage and the last three companies I've rung for quotes simply haven't turned up or returned my calls so any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Best answer: I don't know anyone, but have you tried using the Federation of Master Builders' site? You put in your details and accredited builders will contact you. It essentially is a bit like a tendering process.

Best answer: Is it definitely a builder that you need, or would a roofer do the trick?
(in case it might be of use, I sent you a mail message with details of a roofer I've used)

Drive around your area and look for houses having building work done. Note the address. Go back to the house when the builders have gone and ask the houseowner if they are happy with the builder and if they would recommend them.

I don't know if you've hired builders before or have much experience with tradesmen in the UK but.. this is totally normal. It's a numbers game if you just pick companies at random.

essexjan gives good advice though because I'm lazy, I'd just query anyone I knew in the local area.. neighbours, etc. Even asking in a local group on Facebook could turn up some recommendations.

The danger with doing that, wackybrit, is that you'll probably get someone recommending their idiot brother-in-law who can't knock a nail in straight.

Tradesmen know tradesmen. Do you have a plumber, carpenter or other tradesman that does good work whom you'd hire again? Contact them and ask them for their recommendation and then make sure to relay their recommendation when you call the roofer/builder.
