I'm probably the only one on the planet that remembers...

What is this (probably late night) movie that haunts me from my early childhood? Worm-like monsters, flamethrowers perhaps, holes in the walls of an underground (underwater?) cave, perhaps a submarine...

I guess that's about it, the name and rest of the plot of the movie escape me, and what I have posted is the vagaries of 10+ years of poor memory. We didn't have cable growing up but we did have all the basic (American) network channels and I'm willing to be this is one of those late night special type movies.

Help me hive mind, help me...

Best answer: Leviathan?

DeepStar Six?

The Abyss?

Best answer: Was it set in the desert in a town with a population of like 100? With Kevin Bacon? Tremors?

Best answer: Well, here is a long shot, Lair of the White Worm?

Response by poster: Ok.

Not Tremors, enjoyed it tremendously though (don't ask why).

Not The Abyss (think lower budget/quality/execution).

Leviathan doesn't seem to fit either.

Deep Star Six MIGHT be it, but I can't find enough material to tell, will continue to research. The Deep Star Six wiki post led me to research The Rift, Lords of the Deep, and The Evil Below. I can't get many image results from "The Rift" search, turns out my google-fu is too weak. Lords of the Deep, one reviewer on IMDB said "No action" so that's definitely not it. The Evil Below seems to be more supernatural/spooky/pirate-y than what I'm talking about.

Great suggestions though.

Response by poster: Deep Star Six doesn't seem to have the cave scene I'm remembering with the odd monsters in the wall thing. At least from the wiki description anyway.

Lair of the White Worm is, most assuredly, not it either.

Sorry I can't provide any more information.. guess this was a long shot to begin with..

Here is a list of all the horror movies on IMDB with "cave" as a keyword.

I hate those half-remembered movies, because it always happens that you're confusing the end of Casablanca with the middle of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Best answer: Buffy has had a few episodes with monster-worms-in-caves. Any chance it's a tv show?

Response by poster: @Admiral: I'm with ya, checking those now.

@Jubey: this was way before Buffy's time.

Blerg, the second "cave" was supposed to be "worm." Both links go to the right places, though.

Do you remember how big the worm-monsters were relative to humans?
posted by studentbaker at 12:53 PM on January 19, 2011

Response by poster: @studentbaker: Imagine (and this is the scene as I remember it) a line of humans walking in single file along a ledge/against a wall. All of a sudden... *Phwoosh* a hole (that you really couldn't see before) has a worm-monster-thing-bleh pop out and either bite/eat/kill someone.

So you only really see the 'things' (for lack of a better word) end on. That said, I'd say the cross section of the things would be about the size of a human torso. No larger.

Best answer: I don't know how old you are, but when I think of worms and caves and my childhood, I think of Galaxy of Terror.

Response by poster: Will have to check that one out, location doesn't quite jive, but could very well be it.

Best answer: Actually, that sounds like one of my favorite scenes from Big Trouble in Little China. Do you recall if the scene involved Kurt Russell and a bunch of asian actors?

Best answer: I'm getting Invaders from Mars from this...

Response by poster: @KingEdRa: I think I remember the scene you're talking about. I'll probably have to rewatch that movie now to to see if I'm making that mistake. I don't think I am, but you're dead on as far as style/setting. Side scrolling ledge scene, dank, sweaty stressed characters, odd-monsters with no real base in reality sort of thing. Thanks for that.

@Drasher: Too old I think. This memory definitely smells of 1980's movie, with potential for a bit earlier, not 50's though. That's probably why Big Trouble in Little China fits the feel so well.

Under the Mountain (the series) sort of reminds me of your description.
