What should I plan now to enjoy in the future?

Since I misread this earlier question. So, what should I plan now to enjoy in the future?

I came here to say vintage port. But instead I'm going to say "All your base are belong to us."

Plan to save some money. Having money is fun. Buy some beer with potential.

I feel like we're missing a link. Tax-deferred retirement accounts? Wine? Kimchi? Jet packs? Are you talking about things you should do now to enjoy yourself later, or things you should be excited to look forward to?

Stay in shape. Health is about the best gift you can give to yourself.

Experiences. Have lots and lots of them, as wild as you can cope with (taking into account your current age, health, finances, etc). In the future you will enjoy looking back on them, laughing about them, and having great stories to tell, and you may not be able to do things like that anymore, which will make the memories even more precious.

Finances: 401k, investments, etc.

Health: Exercising, healthy diet and lifestyle

Food: Growing your own garden. From herbs to tomatoes, space permitting. Also can grow flowers or other plants.

Beverage: Booze. Beer takes a few months to process. Your first batch isn't going to be the best. So certainly a practice in patience in getting it right.

Travel: Any places you want to go? Forge future memories. If you are young you can stay at hostels or join groups and events to meet people. Perhaps you may find a friend to enjoy future trips and experiences with.

Music: Pick up an instrument. If you stick with it, you might become good with some hard work and diligent practice. You will enjoy the fruits of your labors in serenading whomever you wish to woo.

These are just a few suggestions off the top of my head. Good Luck!

Some high-demand campsites (I'm looking at you, Yosemite and Angel Island) fill up on the first day that they become available for reservation. Right now, you should find out when those camp sites become available for reservation, then add that day to your calendar including the time that the reservation office/website opens. On that day, reserve the site and begin planning your trip.

Plan to wear sunscreen and sunglasses now (every day) in order to preserve your health and good looks. Don't forget to put it on your hands.

And do everything else suggested above!

I keep thinking I should reserve a hotel room in downtown Boston or Time's Square for New Years eve in whatever number of years in advance I need to rent it. I never do, but I just know if I did it would be really, really nice to have once it comes up.

So yeah. Reserve a hotel room at some spot that is impossible to get during some annual or otherwise pre-planned event. Indy 500, Superbowl, New Years Eve, running of the bulls, Presidential inauguration, whatever.

Also, go climb Kilimanjaro and look at the snow. It's not gonna be there much longer.

Some people sacrifice the future for the present, some sacrifice the present for the future.

One thing for certain your body will not be in the shape it is now, so weigh the odds.

401k's are for suckers who are willing to pay people their money to do something they should be doing themselves, save.

Nail down a home with a lot you can grow food on, get rid of extraneous money wasters like piss poor cable TV and vanity cell phones, large SUVs etc.

Live within your means now, learn how to fix everything in and around your house.

Learn how to cook.

This question asks about waiting lists to get on early.

If you are going to have a garden in the future, plant some trees you like.
You can even grow them from seed in pots. Mature trees are expensive.

Get to know flora and fauna around you. You will always feel at home, because you will be surrounded by familiar things.

If you give a guitar shop a bunch of money now, in two years you'll have a shiny new Rickenbacker.

401k's are tax-deferred. You may or may not believe in tax-deferred accounts, but claiming a 401k is equivalent to a savings account is disingenuous. It has unique tax consequences, and I think there's a pretty resounding consensus that it's probably going to turn out better for most people who use it than just socking away money in an account or under a mattress.

In other words: get started on that 401k, pal. And plant some fruit trees.

Keep fit; eat lots of fruit and fibre. I did the first but not enough of the second. I'm paying for that now.

I also recommend putting a little cash aside when you can purely for use on an extended travel break after you're thirty, or even later. I mean I really, really recommend this.

Build a fallout shelter. Stock it with 5-10 years worth of MREs and fresh water. Added bonus is it'll come in handy if there's a zombie uprising too.
