Turn off All Instruments mode if you can. Should be in the Options menu for any player. If you've got a guitarist, bassist and keyboard player in your band, though, you won't have a choice—All Instruments mode will be forced on, and you won't get points or overdrive for vocals. This may have to do with the Wii (and 360?) controller limitation; it can only see four controllers at a time, so Rock Band 3 only scores four instruments. This is true even on the PS3, which supports up to 7 controllers theoretically.

Response by poster: if this is the case...does anyone know why this is? kinda makes singing pointless for me then...

Vocals can be scored if you're in a small enough band or if you're on your own. For example, if you've just got a guitarist, bassist and drummer in addition to any number of vocalists, you're good. (Or at least I'm pretty sure you are—I haven't had the chance to put together that many people yet!)

Saw this description of the issue elsewhere:

Basically, if you're not in All Instruments mode, you have 1 reserved vocalist(s) slot, 1 reserved drummer slot, and 2 "stringed" slots (keyboard and/or guitar). If you want 3 "stringed" instruments, you have to use All Instruments mode. So you can do drummer + keys + guitar + vocal and get points, but not keys + guitar + bass + vocal.

Of course, the "why" is unknown (havent seen an interview with devs). Definitely seems messed up and annoying.
