I got ONE turntable and a microphone.

I need a turntable in New York City by tomorrow morning as early as possible. Any ideas, hive mind?

I quite suddenly find myself in a crazy situation. I live in NYC, and I'm going to Virginia to DJ my sister-in-law's birthday party. I have all my own gear - two turntables and a mixer. However, the left channel on one of my tables is not working properly, and when I showed them at the shop earlier this week, they told me it's not the simplest repair in the world. I had arranged for a backup, but that person fell through the night before the party, and now I'm one turntable short. All my other friends seem to only have standard non-DJ tables, not Technics tables like I require.

I have looked into renting tables, but we were honestly hoping to get on the road as early as possible tomorrow (@10:00 or 11:00), and without any advance notice, who can say whether any of these places will have any available.

Why oh why is there not a 24-hour DJ emergency company that could get me tables to DJ with? Does anyone have any ideas?

Best answer: Have you checked Craigslist?

Best answer: I was about to say Craigslist. If you don't see any for sale, or no one responds fast enough, just put up a want ad. Either offer to buy one outright or ask to rent one and put down collateral. There are a zillion people on Craigslist who would be glad to help.

If you're considering buying a turntable, you could call the Best Buy in Union Square. It's open 24 hours on the weekends and has a DJ equipment department.

Guitar Center opens at 10AM (there're also locations in Brooklyn and Queens). You should be able to find out online if they carry the specific turntable you need (maybe this one?)

If you can't get one, use only the right channel and set the mixer to mono. It'll probably make some of the songs sound weird, but I'd bet hardly anyone would notice.

Guitar Centers will always, always have technics 1200s in stock, although in a pinch any direct drive table will work well enough for a one off, though you'll struggle with beatmatching a bit. My first DJ gig was off a 'dj in a box' kit that had 2 tables and a mixer for like $200. I wouldn't recommend it for professional work, but it's usable.

Virginia, btw, had guitar centers.

Where in Virginia are you going to be? If you're going to be in the Richmond area, I might be able to get you a loaner or a used from one of my DJ friends (I sold my technics a long time ago). (memail me)
