How can I make my video thumbnails start showing up again?

Why aren't my video thumbnails showing?

Not too long ago, I started having problems with the thumbnails of videos in my file folders not showing up; instead of the thumbnail, an icon would be displayed for RealPlayer. Since I've used RealPlayer to download most of the videos, I thought maybe it was a problem with RealPlayer. But when I switched the video format to VLC media files, the same problem was still there, except with VLC icons being displayed instead of thumbnails.

I can't understand what's causing it, as I had never before had any problems with the video thumbnails not being properly displayed, and now they simply won't display at all. At first, the problem was only happening for some of the videos, but now it's spread to nearly all of them. The thumbnails of WMV and Quicktime videos still show up fine, but for any other format, just the program icon shows. If it makes any difference, my OS is Vista Home Premium.

I installed the KL Codec Pack which enabled thumbnail generation for all the various odd formats. They have a nice "reset settings" feature upon installation that might take care of your issue.

"I installed the KL Codec Pack …"

Grrrrr.....

The right way to do it.

Note that it can be adapted for any video file type that has a valid codec installed, merely by changing the filetype in the key e.g. [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.asf\ShellEx\... from the example can be changed to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.divx\ShellEx\... or whatever, as necessary.
