I got tons of suggestions. But do you want happy/sunny/watery beach-themed suggestions? Or just good music in general? and really how would you go about defining 'good' music? also are you just gonna be sitting on the beach listening to music or do you need something as background for reading?

Lacking any other information, I have to recommend Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Best.
Album.
Ever.

Weezer - Island of the sun
311 - Amber
Eagles - Tequila Sunrise
Jimmy Buffett - Margaritaville
Squeeze - Pulling Mussels
Jimmy Buffett - Boat Drinks
Kenny Chesney - No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem
Otis Redding - Dock of the Bay
Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride
U2 - Beautiful Day
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
Guns n Roses - Paradise City
Beach Boys - Fun Fun Fun
10000 Maniacs - These are the days
The Police - Invisible Sun

Bran van 3000: Old School. Samples Rappers Delight heavily and has a heavy metal guy that busts into the otherwise house/hip-hop melody in order to up the ROCK quotient a few points.

ok... i guess i should clarify. im not just looking for good music. as jodic put it, im looking for "happy/sunny/watery beach-themed suggestions".

Beach music == Beach boys.

Even if you hate them normally, their songs are excellent on the beach. I won't recommend particular songs, because I'm lazy.

Quadrophoenia may not be all that uplifting, but it's certainly beach-centric.

I would say just about anything by Bob Marley. Start with Legend.

And you know I'll think of you

although I'm not a big fan of David Byrne, he did put together a couple compilations of music from Brazil ("brazil classics 1&2") that are perfect for the beach. Oh, and looking at those search results I see that there was a volume 3 that I haven't heard.

Geographically, Brazil is one long beach, more or less, so they have good beach-music sense.

Smash Mouth "Pacific Coast Party"

Hey,
I heard somebody say,
"Work harder than you play"
But I never missed a single day's party.

Along with the Jimmy Buffet songs already mentioned, I'd add "Fins."

Ummm, basically every Sublime song made. And Bob Marley too. 311 makes good beach music (the more mellow stuff) along with some Weezer from the Green Album.

You can't be without some good surf music:

- The Ventures
- The Centurions
- The Lively Ones

...and of course, the "king of surf guitar":
- Dick Dale (I highly recommend the CD "King of The Surf Guitar: The Best of Dick Dale and His Deltones" there are some really great songs on there... perfect for the beach)

I would also suggest throwing this onto your playlist:

"Air Conditioned Nightmare" - Mr. Bungle - California

for a nice "aliens invade the beach party" kind of feel.
