Is $400 for a used nikon d90 worth it?

I was considering selling my nikon d90 body and buying the d7000 when it comes out. A local camera shop offered me 400 dollars for the used d90. Is that a decent price for it? It's in great condition. I love the d90 but I bought it for the video features which ive been disappointed with. The d7000 seems to improve on all the video issues I've had. Any thoughts?

I just looked on ebay at the completed auctions and they are going for $550-$650, body only, used, mint condition.

Seconded. You're getting ripped letting it go for that cheap. Damn. My friend has one, and it's a great camera.

Yeah, you can get at least $200 more on CL or eBay.

(Also, I'd give very serious consideration to switching to Canon at this point. I went from D90 to Canon 7D because I wanted to use it to make movies. Canon has left Nikon in the dust, video-wise. It seems like the D7000 is a big step forward for them, but it still seems like a risk vs. the Canons that are being used in Hollywood and everywhere for filmmaking)

A camera shop's intention is to resell the thing for close to or slightly higher than market value, clean it out and charge an outrageous amount to warranty the thing. If you want to get more money for it, look to sell via craigslist or ebay. Also note the shutter count, included accessories, warranty, etc.

That said, I have one and when a D700 replacement comes out I'm hoping I can part with my D90 for $550-650!

Well, yes, you could do better on Craigslist or eBay. The local camera shop is pretty effortless, though, and doesn't involve a trip to the post office, or meeting strangers.

It's exactly like selling your car - yes, you can get more doing it yourself, but the dealer will do it for you - but only IF they can make a buck doing so.

I sold my D90 plus a set of lenses for $1000 on Craigslist a few months ago. If I recall correctly, the body was about $850 new, so you should be able to get at least $600 for it.

What AsYouKnow Bob said. If it's worth it to you to not have to deal with actually reselling it, then yes, take the $400. If you can deal with Craigslist/ebay/etc for a few extra hundred, go for it. Some find it a hassle they don't want to bother with, others don't mind. What are you?

Nothing against them, but resellers of used stuff have to make a profit too, or else they wouldn't exist.

I'm surprised that you found a shop that would give you that much for it.

That said, I'd try craigslist or ebay 9f you don't mind the hassle. You'll get a lot more money.

$400 is a fair price from a shop - if speed and convenience is important to you.

B&H (bhphotovideo.com) will offer $319-$405 for a D90 in "signs of use" condition depending on if you have none, or all, of the assorted accessories (straps, body cap, etc)

KEH (keh.com) will offer $415 for D90 in EX+ condition. I know that keh will increase their offer based on final examination of the products if it rates higher than your estimate.

Response by poster: Thanks guys! I think I'll try craigslist first and see what happens. Is $600 about right? I have a 1.8 lens I could give the buyer an option to buy with it. Does $600 for the body and $700 for body + 50mm 1.8 lens sound right?

I love the 1.8 lens and would buy a new one if I sold it but figure that might make the camera more appealing to someone who doesn't already own a lens.

austinlee, instead of asking us for opinions, why don't you go right now to ebay, put in the item you're intending to sell, sort the results by "ending soonest" (so you'll see the prices they're actually selling at, not the early-low bids), and get a feel for real market prices, instead of our guesses?
