AOL incompatible with Twitter?
September 23, 2010 8:36 PM

Help, please. I cannot get any page at all at Twitter to load -- it just kicks me back to whatever page I was on previously. This started exactly when I installed the latests AOL Aim program on 9.15. I have updated my firefox browser, erased cache and cookies, and made sure JavaScript was enabled, and updated Java, but still no dice. Any ideas? I cannot even get to the Twitter help page or log in. Thank you so much.

Have you tried rebooting? Using another browser (just to see if you can load Twitter)?

you might want to consider a twitter client like Tweetdeck or Hootsuite if you can't get hte page to load.

I have tried other browsers, iconomy, but as soon as I try to log in, I get shut out of the Twitter site again. It's affecting my Facebook account too -- I can only see my page for a second or two, and then it kicks me back to whatever page I was looking at previously. Damn them.

Have you checked your HOSTS file?

Also, what OS are you using?

One more thing, did you happen to fall victim to the OnMouseover attack? (That is, did you visit Twitter while it was going on and mouse over any links?) A malicious site could have rewritten your HOSTS file or done other nasty things if you're not properly protected. When you look at your HOSTS file, hit ctrl+F if you're on Windows and search for Twitter or Facebook... they might have had their addresses redirected.

You could try going to Tools --> Add-ons in Firefox and seeing if there are any AOL/AIM-related extensions or plugins installed. If so, disable them, restart Firefox and see if the problem persists.

(It's been awhile since I've messed with HOSTS files, but from what I recall they can only redirect a domain to a [specific] IP; I don't think they're capable of redirecting the browser back to whatever page it was on previously.)

Thanks for the help, everyone. I just went back to a system restore point on Sept. 8, BEFORE I ever downloaded that awful AIM stuff, and everything now works. I'll never go near their site again. I really don't think it had anything to do with Twitter or Facebook -- though I might be wrong. Appreciate your brain power so much!!

If you want something AIM-compatible that won't do anything stupid to your machine, try Pidgin.
