Touchpad on laptop problem

Have a Dell Studio Laptop, having problem with touchpad mouse...
When scrolling across the screen, the mouse will turn into what looks like a small ruler icon (1/2 inch in size) with arrows on either side. What is this and how can I turn it off?

Or, if you want multitouch, de/increase the finger spacing until you don't trigger it accidentally.

it sounds like it could also be the volume fader, which can pop up (by design) when you're touching the rightmost side of the touchpad. when you see that icon appear onscreen, see if sliding your finger up or down makes things louder or quieter, respectively. if so, that's it.

I think with dell, you can't turn off horizontal multitouch without turning off vertical.
Also, if you have an ALPs (crappy) touchpad, get the latest Dell drivers (r279834); they're much better.
