Doggie incontinence drugs? Do they work?

Our 13 year old female shepherd-husky mix is the picture of good health, with the exception of occasional nighttime incontinence. She can go all day long while we are at work, but at night, even after a just-before-bedtime walk, we'll wake to find her in a small puddle, or worse, if she jumps up on the bed for a bit of a cuddle before we get up, we'll end up having to wash the sheets and mattress pad.

I have heard that there are some drugs that can help with dog incontinence - is this true? Yes, I know YANMV and I will be making an appointment with the vet, just wanted to go in armed with some knowledge, even if anecdotal.

Are you talking about proin? Yes, it does help a good deal.

Our dog is on proin. It has been a furniture saver in our home.

I am not your vet.

Phenylpropanolamine is a godsend for dogs. Seriously. It is off the market for human use due to a suspected (last i knew it was not proven) link to stroke. The incidence of cerebrovascular accident in dogs on PPA is very low. It can occur but the odds are against it. I can't even begin to count the number of past patients whose quality of life has improved due to PPA.

It can be costly compared to some vet side drugs. I had a client a long time ago who had it compounded overseas, but not sure where. Most often it comes in a flavored tablet, so be careful and make sure it is out of reach of doggie noses and teeth.

Our elderly dog was on phenylpropanolamine for a while. For her it was difficult to find a balance between a dose she could tolerate and one that was effective, possibly exacerbated by her numerous health issues. If we gave her a full dose, we could hear her heart beating from several feet away. It's worth a try, but if there are other health issues involved, ask the vet about starting at a lower dose.

My dog is on phenylwhatevernickelpickle said. My dog has been taking it her entire life (after a less-than-perfect spaying operation) and according to her old owner, the problems stopped immediately after starting the drugs. She's had no problems with me with continued use.

I can get a bottle of 100 pills (and she gets one pill per day) for $29 from my vet. YMMV.
