Help Me Love the White and Black Arrows

The select and direct selection tools in illustrator cs5 have suddenly stopped behaving normally. Does anyone know how to fix this?
When I click on a path, it does not *appear* to be selected (i.e no points, or anchors, or anything gets highlighted) But I can actually manipulate it.
I closed AI and restarted in case I changed a preference by accident.
I checked the show bounding box option.
Smart guides are on.
using a Macbook pro, if that matters.
Don't remember doing anything that caused this--maybe I hit a keyboard shortcut or something?
Hope that was a clear enough description. I have about a bazillion paths to tweak this afternoon--anyone have any idea?
