Hivemind help me find a story about Katrina...

I'm trying to find a specific story about the aftermath of the Katrina storm in New Orleans...

Specifically, it's by a guy who lived & worked there. He took care of his neighbors dogs and cats for a while, got arrested & then finally released, found a boat and ended up at the Memorial Medical Center where he witnessed the "triage" and subsequent murder of patients. It was an extremely gripping account and I'm having no luck with the Scroogle et al in finding it. Thanks in advance!

The first part of what you describe sounds exactly like Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. But the part about the medical center might be from a different story? I know the original basis for the book was a shorter story in a compilation of Katrina stories, though I can't remember the title right now. Could you have conflated the two?

Was it part of this NY Times Magazine story?

Response by poster: The article I'm looking for was written by Abdulrahman Zeitoun, it's probably what inspired Dave Eggers to write his book. I haven't found it yet, but at least I've got something to search with. Thanks!
