What kind of flower is this?

You water the plant by pouring water down the center "stem," and the plant just drinks in the water as it needs it. We are in the DC metro area, if that matters.

I love you for answering this question.

Best answer: It's a bromeliad.

Best answer: Yep, it's a bromeliad. We sell them where I work. We had one just like the one pictured one time, too (they don't all look alike.)

Oh, and eventually that middle stem will die down but not before "pups" grow surrounding it. Each of those "pups" will make a new bromeliad plant.

Wow, fast answer! You botany folks are amazing. I'm disturbed by any plant whose offspring are termed "pups."

For future reference, WalterReeves.com has a nifty "Name That Plant" section where you can upload pix like this for identification.

I used to have one of those. I ended up giving it to my mom because I don't do houseplants, but I was told that you can induce it to flower by placing the plant and half an apple in a plastic bag and sealing it up.

Make sure to keep a little puddle of water in the hollow part of the stem or it'll dry up and die.

Bromeliad is a pretty broad term. Heck, a pineapple is a bromeliad. Just sayin'.

Mine was called a silver vase plant, and Googling that shows me the same flower.
