What shirt should a bigger guy wear for a casual engagement photo shoot?

I'm having an engagement photo shoot in Toronto this coming weekend. We are planning on going relatively casual, to the point where I know I will be wearing dark blue jeans and some black sneakers with detailing on them that are both casual but funky.

However, I don't know what shirt I should wear. I am a bigger guy both in height and weight, and I'd like to wear something both slimming and casual (but not TOO casual). I'm normally a t-shirt kind of guy, but would rock a long sleeve button down if it would look good.

So, since I'm planning on buying something new, any advice would be useful - type of shirt, colour, tucked in or out, brand, anything.

Thanks in advance!

not sure what your aesthetic is, but what about something retro?

Whatever you go with, please, please wash it before you wear it. It kills me to see formal photos where the guy's shirt has obvious "new shirt" fold marks.

Don't go matchy-matchy with your fiancee in colors. Don't wear predominantly white or black. No big patterns or florals or small stripes (big stripes are okay) or a design on the shirt that will take away focus from you and your fiancee.

Do go through other engagement photos taken by your photographer, or take a look at other photographer blogs for ideas of what guys tend to wear in engagement shoots.

From my experience, it's jeans and a bright-colored polo shirt or T-shirt while your fiancee wears a pretty dress in another bright color. The colors gel together but don't match.
In many engagement shoots, you bring more than one outfit, and sometimes three, so that the pictures don't look like they were all shot at the same time in the same place. But you should work that out with your photographer.

Yeah, I went with a nice black polo.

(Black polo, medium-dark dress pants, tucked in, black belt, black shoes.)

Here's a blog entry that features a bigger guy and his so in a photoshoot, if you want to look there for reference.

I would recommend a bright colored polo or a long sleeved button down shirt with the sleeves (at least partially) rolled up. Leave it tucked in or out depending on how you feel, personally I think both work. I also think a casual, light v neck sweater might look good. And your idea about the dark jeans and funky sneakers is perfect.

I'd go with JoanArkham's retro shirt (untucked) or callmejay's black polo (tucked in)--both make up a large part of my summer wardrobe. I'm 6'5", 250 lbs., and wear such things to the numerous casual outdoor weddings I've been officiating.

As a bigger guy as well, I'd say go with the retro shirt.

But, check out some Rugby shirts too. I've seen some I've liked lately and that would be different. That might more difficult to find one that would work for the photo shoot.

You want an Oxford-cloth button-down collar shirt, I think. Go for a classic color - light blue, white, yellow, or pink. If it fits well, it will look good tucked or untucked (I'd go with tucked in, and I am a bigger guy also, but it's your call).

As some other have said, a light casual v-neck sweater would be great with this, but not necessary. It would go great with the dark jeans and sneakers, too.

Just as important as the style: Are you going to order your photographic prints in color, or in b/w or sepia tone? My now-husband and I didn't think of this when we chose our clothes. I wore a shirt of kind of medium-blue that ended up not looking good in either b/w or sepia. It just didn't contrast enough with my skin tone. DH wore a dark shirt and has light skin and he looked great in the prints. Crisp white would have looked great, too. So in the case of photos that are not full-color, go with contrast.
