Registering an Iceland

I'd like to register an ".is" domain. I have no connection to Iceland - I just really like a particular domain name. Is this possible? If so, where can I host it?

Response by poster: I saw that, but I'm looking for more info.

On the rules page, it talks about needing a Iceland registered trademark or international legal status. Neither apply in my situation. I'm trying to find out if there's another way.

I guess what I'm looking for is an agent that will help foreign applicants get through the process. Google didn't come up with much.

Response by poster: Well, hell. It's the first thing on the ISNIC's FAQ page, and this copyright agent spells it out even clearer. I should have dug a little deeper before posting a question.

Move along, nothing to see here.

By the way, you shouldn't have any problem finding anyone to host the site for you. You just need to have the DNS information point to the right nameservers. There shouldn't be any limitation on the side of the host to do the hosting.

letitrain, I've been trying for years to get a .is domain, and I read the faq and that site you linked but I still am not sure if I can get one if I don't have anything official registered in Iceland. Can Americans wanting funny foo.is addresses get them? How much does that agent service cost and do you register directly through them?

Response by poster: From what I understand, you need to register a trademark with the government of Iceland, then register the domain name. The domain registration itself isn't cheap ($200ish, then $130/year to renew) and I have no idea what it costs to register the trademark. Judging from the pictures of beautiful law offices on the websites of all the listed agents, I'd guess it isn't cheap.

I think I'm going to try anyway... I'll report back after getting more information. Thanks for the DNS tip, pwb503!

Is the domain name "pen"?

Various non-(exactly)-Icelandic domain names I found in a quick google (ignoring stuff like travel.is):
superhighway.is (aggregator)
wireless.is (NYC-based IT consultant, but living in Iceland)
the inevitable this.is, there.is, and here.is (but no that.is or what.is, who & where are banked, and why.is taken by a university).
And it doesn't have the requisite domain name, but there actually is a pen.is site.

No, but that would be quite the domain to write emails from, wouldn't it?
