i am trying to update my iphone to ios4 and when i click to check for updates all it tells me is that my itunes is updated. why won't it update my iphone? how do i get it to??
i have a 2nd gen iphone. when i go into my itunes to sync my phone, there's a notice that i can update to ios4 for my phone. however, when i click the button to update, i get a message stating that my itunes is the latest version and that's all that happens. wtf?

If by 2nd gen, you mean the original 2G, then you're out of luck:

I do think you can get some of the ios4 features on the 2G, and more if you decide to jailbreak. I don't have many of the facts because I don't own the 2G, but you can do some research here.

I had this same problem with my iPhone 3Gs. It turned out that downloading the lastest version of iTunes fixed it (yes, after clicking "check for updates" gave me a message that my iTunes was the latest version--it turned out that this was incorrect).

You need the latest iTunes (9.2?). Also if by 2nd gen you mean 3G expect it to take hours (depending on how much media you have).

Yep, you need one with a black or white back, not a silver back.

You need iTunes 9.2. You can check the version by going to iTunes > About iTunes (assuming you're on a Mac rather than a PC).

If you have an iPhone 3G you might want to wait before upgrading to 4.0 and see what reviewers say. My personal experience has been negative. iOS 4.0 appears to use a lot more memory, resulting in a device that is very sluggish when launching memory-intensive apps (camera, scrabble, photo album).

If its a 3G (which is the 2nd Gen), try doing a restore: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/21/ios-4-updating-woes-with-iphone-3g/

Seconding what alms said. My upgrade to iOS 4.0 on my iPhone 3G has made it noticeably more laggy. This is the first time an Apple product upgrade has ever slowed down something I'm using, and I'm a little disappointed.

A friend of mine saw this on his iMac. It turned out he hadn't updated to iTunes 9.2 yet, which is required to install iOS 4 (yes, the error text is uncharacteristically misleading). Use Software Update from your System Preferences to download and install iTunes, then plug your iPhone in, choose it from the Devices section of the left hand column, and click "Update" in the Summary tab. Your phone will then update as expected.

Yeah, the wording is unclear and unhelpful. You need to upgrade your iTunes, and then it will see that a phone update is available.

For what it's worth I have a 3G running 4.0 and after I rebooted I'm not having any sluggishness issues (just tried to open camera, and it opened in about the same time as before). The only apps that are giving me trouble are the ones that haven't been updated yet.
But yes, as others have said, you have to upgrade itunes and you have to synch everything before you can upgrade. If you try to upgrade before synching, the process will error out when it tries to do a backup.
