New to Kiaser HMO in Los Angeles. Pick my doctor and my shrink.

I just joined Kaiser in Los Angeles. My primary facility will probably be the complex at Sunset and Vermont. I need a primary care physician, and I need a shrink.

I'm not sure any of this additional information is relevant, but: I'm in generally good health, I'm in my 20s, and I'm male. My mental health needs are quite basic; I benefit from talk therapy about the various issues in my life, but I have no diagnoses or "bigger" issues to manage.

I think it's all pretty straightforward, but as an aside: is there anything Kaiser offers that I should make sure to take advantage of?

Talk to Bob Oppenheimer in Mental Health. He's usually full but he will know who you should see so when you call, ask if you can talk to him about a referral.

That' my center. :-) For primary care I think Ani Markarian is good. Very easy to talk to and helpful dealing with minor problems.

You do not need a referral for mental health, just call to ask for an appt. 323-783-2600. Feel free to message me if you need help getting around. Its a big complex.

Ask if they offer a new member health screening. It was relatively comprehensive back when I started working here, but I am not sure if they still do it.

They have a lot of classes for members and non members both, in helthy living and exercise. The schedule at kp.org is not up to date, but call the contact number there and ask for a list.

Also, any time you travel out of the country, call the travel office a few months in advance. They will send health advisories, arrange vaccinations (free), and get you prescriptions for anti-diarrheals, anti-malarials, and antibiotics to take in case of intestinal infection--depending on your destination of course.

Depending on exactly where you live, you may find it more convenient to go for most of your care to a closer medical office. There are some in East LA, Glendale, Culver City, and 2 in Pasadena, plus others that are less LA focused.

Response by poster: Thanks to both of you. I'm scheduling a new member screening right now, and will look into Oppenheimer as well.
