Help me replicate digital on-demand printer settings?

What information do I need from digital print shop A in order to find digital print shop B that uses the same setup (or as close a match as possible)?

I am creating tabloid-sized posters (using Illustrator) and sending them to a company in another city, who then sends my pdf 1a/x files to a digital on-demand print shop.
I want to be able to find a digital on-demand printer here in Toronto that uses settings similar to the print shop so I can do more accurate proofing of my own. I.e I'm getting back totally different colours in the proofs.

What information do I need to get from the company's printer so that I can find someone in Toronto using a similar setup?

Do you mean that the returned proofs don't match what's on your screen? If so, is your monitor calibrated?

Response by poster: I've got my own monitor calibrated and my printer matches it, but the printer's proof is totally different.

Best answer: Ideally, you need ICC color profiles from the two printers. Then, you generate a version of the file using the correct profile color space for the particular printer. Not a lot of on-demand digital printers provide profiles, though.

It's not a case of finding a printer with a similar setup. That will be almost impossible due to so many variables. Find a digital printer that will provide an ICC profile for their printer.

Seconding what Thorzdad said. If you can get their profile, you can use it in View/Proof Setup/Customize and then tweak the image from there. You should also find out what Color Management settings they're using in the Print window (Printer managed vs. App Managed and the rendering intent).
