where to live near the university of nevada/reno?
(asking for a friend)
looking for hivemind recommendations for living space for a student new to the university of nevada/reno, pursuing her master's degree, currently residing in turkey.
are there any off campus options which would not require a car? best neighborhoods? neighborhoods to avoid? are furnished apartments common? (she's been thru craigslist, hasn't yet found anything)
is there a choice (i.e. select) on-campus residence? (fwiw, she's a fulbright scholar, might end up working as a t.a.)
as she'll only have a limited time to get settled before the school year begins in september, a cheap, clean short term arrangement might be her first stop.
and, while we've got your attention, any recommendations for shopping, fun, sun, music would be very appreciated.

For on campus housing, there is Canada Hall, which is geared toward Juniors/Seniors/Grad Students. It isn't too shabby and is has a suite setup where there are three rooms for six people with a shared living space and kitchen. It is much quieter than a typical dorm. The location of Canada is right on Virginia St. and literally a stones throw away from an RTC main bus line and the Sierra Spirit, which is free and does a loop between campus and downtown.
For off campus housing, I would highly recommend living West of campus. I am currently living in a furnished apartment (the room isn't furnished, but the common space is), about an 8 minute walk away from campus. There are furnished options out there, and if you need more information on where to look, just send me a message.
Another temporary solution while she is getting set up is the University Inn. I've never stayed there, but I think it is the default place to stay for visiting professors and students, and will likely be cheaper than just renting a hotel room, as I believe it is run by the University.
Shopping: The Summit Sierra Mall is the main mall with your typical mall staples, but it is about as far from campus as you can get. Downtown has some boutique type shops.
Fun: I don't know what she likes to do, but Reno definitely has options. I'd highly recommend going to Lake Tahoe in the summer for fun. Sand Harbor and Zephyr Cove are the most accessible beaches, and are absolutely beautiful. Rafting the Truckee River, or heading down to Wingfield Park downtown is also a lot of fun in the summer.
Music: They just opened the Knitting Factory downtown, and they have had some decent shows. Some fairly big acts come through town to play the Casino showrooms, or outdoor shows in the summer. There have been some great concerts in South Lake Tahoe in the past few years, providing you need a reason to go up to the lake.
I suppose if you would like more info, just send me a message. Congrats on the Fulbright!
