Trivia about Gerald Ford's appointment of Justice Stevens

In this article, it says that President Ford appointed Stevens because he was looking for the "best legal mind." Can this be confirmed with a direct contemporaneous quote from Ford? A rant in Op Ed News uses the quote "I picked the best legal mind I knew in the country," but that piece gets so many facts about Elena Kagan wrong that I don't find the author particularly credible.

Best answer: Will the the New York Times suffice? BTW, the correct quote is "the finest legal mind i could find" (many hits on google). I don't have access to news databases or anything, but it seems legit.

Response by poster: Thanks: I missed that because I was searching for "best legal mind."
