Warm apple cider is nice. You might add a bit more cinnamon if you want a more spicy bite. posted by AlexReynolds at 2:26 PM on February 3, 2005
You could get some mulling spices and have warm mulled cider ... I think it usually includes cinnamon and cloves and some other goodies. There are lots of different recipes for it. posted by librarina at 2:36 PM on February 3, 2005
I 2nd the mulling spices. The few times that I have had made me think I was drinking hot liquid apple pie. It was heavenly. posted by mmascolino at 3:04 PM on February 3, 2005
My simple mulled cider
1/2 gallon apple cider
just a bit (2 tablespoons maybe) of lemon juice and/or orange juice
a piece of cinnamon bark (AKA a cinnamon stick)
a couple whole cloves
a couple whole allspices
Bring to a boil and boil for five minutes, then turn down, cover, and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Pour through a strainer into mugs or heat-proof glasses posted by Utilitaritron at 3:13 PM on February 3, 2005
Oh yes, mulled apple cider is wonderful. In the chillier months, my wife and I fill our crock pot/slow cooker with two parts apple juice to one part cranberry juice (not cocktail, just cranberry juice). We throw in a piece of cheesecloth full of mulling spices and just leave the crock pot on all day. We've found the Spice Hunter brand of mulling spices that comes in a small round tin to be the best (lower right in this image).
The concoction fills the house with yummy smells and it's always hot and ready. Add a touch of brandy if you want to make Dean Martin really proud. :-) posted by DakotaPaul at 4:41 PM on February 3, 2005
I knew I forgot something: add a bay leaf too! posted by Utilitaritron at 6:42 PM on February 3, 2005
Apple cider (or even juice) heated with some lemon and pernod. If you heat it long enough it will be non-alcoholic. Or you could get some anise extract. posted by kenko at 10:10 AM on February 4, 2005
