To Write is to write is to write.

Charlotte, NC, transplant writer (involuntarily amateur) looking for a writing circle/critique group/community of writers.

I do use online critique groups (Critters, ReviewFuse, etc.), but those tend to be a bit of a crapshoot in terms of the response quality. They also tend to just be "Here is my essay on your story" and no back-and-forth discussion, which is where I find the most benefit. I'd really like to be able to sit down and face-to-face with other writers.

I'm a sci-fi/fantasy/horror guy myself, only short stories completed thus far (though I could use a kick in the pants and/or some non-spousal validation as far as the inevitable half-finished novel goes). I've been actively submitting to short fiction magazines and webzines for 15 months and never getting farther than "It's nice but..." Crit groups specific for SF/F/H and short stories would be a plus, but not strictly necessary. I'd also rather not have to pay beyond covering the cost for space etc., and listening to lectures from celebrity writers has minimal interest.

Anyone know of such a place? Or who would be willing to help me co-found one?

This blog belongs to a friend of mine in Charlotte, and he's been posting lately about his poetry/open mic nights/other stuff. He might be someone worth keeping up with, in case an event he's attending locally might have some appeal to you. Feel free to namedrop my handle to him, if you're interested in reaching out. Good guy, active in the local arts. Good luck to you.
