What is the trombone-ey bass-like instrument that first comes in at around 0:37 of this live version of the 59th Street Bridge Song?
At first glance, it looks fun to play and maybe easy enough to build. Later in the video, it almost definitely looks homemade. Any ideas?

Best answer: The guy playing is Mark Stewart, who invents many of his instruments. That looks like his TrombaDoo (yup, it's a slide digeridoo).
