DIY Scanning Super 8mm films

I have about 100 reels of 8mm film that I want to scan to a digital format. Is there a way I can do it myself?
I've had a reel transferred to DVD by some company a while ago, it cost about $140AUD and that was in standard def. The company basically scanned each frame in and then converted it back into a movie.
I'd like to find a way to do this myself as I haven't the funds to get all the reels transferred professionally. I definitely do not want to record a lo-fi projection on a wall...
Does anyone know of a hack or some special scanner or scanner attachment that will allow me to scan frames of 8mm film quickly and accurately? If I can find a way to do this, converting them back into movies should be a cinch, right?

In the search bar enter "How to Convert 8 mm Movies to DVD"
There it shows how to do the conversion yourself.
