CES for Non-Attendees

Am planning on going on to the strip in Las Vegas tomorrow and would like to see a bit of the CES spectacle. What can you see and do and where should you go, if you don't actually go into the convention center? Thanks!

Umm, you could hang out at the Hilton or the Venetian and see lots of CES attendees walk by. Or drive the strip and get stuck in CES traffic.

I go to CES every year (and right now) and I'm trying to think of a less snarky answer, but it's pretty hard. There are some outside events, like various parties and "Showstoppers," a 3rd-party mini-tradeshow, but most of those are even more invitation-only than CES is--I'm here at CES as Press and still don't get into half of those.

OK, here's one: the official CES Tweetup doesn't appear to require a badge to get in. The blogger party at the Atomic Testing Museum doesn't require a badge, but it is invitation-only and already booked.

My non-answer: At any given time in Las Vegas there are a half dozen conventions going on. CES is big, but few outside of the convention itself are going to get worked up about it. You're more likely to see outside references to the smaller Adult Entertainment Expo.

You could try getting your hands on some of the literature handed out at the convention itself -- that will likely have lots more event info than the CES website does. You'd still have to go to the convention center, tho.

This is undoubtedly not-entirely-legal, but you could look like you're on a mission and just waltz in. I accidentally ended up in the National Hardware Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center in May and once I realized it wasn't where I wanted to be (I needed to be in the convention "suite" of the Hilton!) but I could walk through the show to get there.. I just went head up and went right through the show!

CES may well have better security though, but with the way the LVH and CC are designed, I dare say it's possible. An alternative could be to get into an ancillary free event and then use the crowds or internal doors to get into restricted areas.

All that said, I don't recommend you do any of the above (well, okay, I am, but I'm not responsible if you get busted - so don't do it!)
