Is there something wrong with my new camera?

On my new canon rebel xsi, in aperture priority mode the camera won't let me open the aperture past 5.0, how do I fix this or is there something wrong with my camera?

I have the canon rebel xsi with the standard kit lens which has an aperture which I believe opens to 3.5. This aperture (3.5) has also been used occasionally when shooting in automatic mode, and when in av mode it will occasionally let me change it to this but not a lot. It will let me narrow the aperture though and increase the number.

I have a basic understanding of how aperture works, but It's not perfect, so sorry if this question didn't make perfect sense. Thanks for your help!

Best answer: Check that the lens isn't zoomed in? The lens is 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, so at 18mm it can open up to 3.5, however at 55mm it will be restricted to 5.6.

Best answer: The aperture on the lens you linked depends on where in the zoom range you have it. If you have it at 18mm you'll get f/3.5, if you have it at 55mm, you'll get f/5.6, in between you'll get some other maximum aperture on a roughly linear (?) slope.

Looks like others beat me to my first suggestion, so I'll just say that if the zoom range isn't the issue after all, take the kit to your local camera shop and try swapping bodies and/or lenses. That will let you see where the behavior "travels" and thus determine whether the fault is in the body or the lens.

Response by poster: Just to clarify, I was zoomed out, and as soon as I zoomed back in all was well. Thanks again everyone!

Don't feel like an idiot... at least, not more of one than I was when this stumped me. And I'm an optical engineer.
