[WiiFilter] What are your favorite two-player Virtual Console/WiiWare games?
Looking to find some fun two-player games for me and my boyfriend to play. I haven't been in the Wii Store for a while and am a little overwhelmed by all of the choices.
Of VC/WiiWare multiplayer games, I currently have and enjoy Dr. Mario, Bomberman '93, Bubble Bobble and Super Smash Bros - this also gives you an idea of what kind of games I like. (Also really love Mario Kart Wii, but of course that is not in this category). My boyfriend also likes shooter and strategy games, and I would also love some larger adventure type games which are fun to play together, so I guess it's all over the place. But since the Wii Shop games are so cheap, I'm open to trying out almost any game which has a great two-player mode.

I don't want to turn into the Ask Metafilter Wii bore*, but I just commented in this thread regarding Wii games. It sounds like New Super Mario Bros Wii might be up your street. It's a disk-based game, not Wiiware, but it's Mario with up to four players simultaneously. (Disclaimer: I don't actually own the game, so I'm recommending it blind. Perhaps somebody else can chime in with their experiences of it. The reviews I've seen for it have been favourable, however).
In that other thread, I also went on about Bit.Trip.Beat. (This is a Wiiware game). I believe it has a two, three or even four player option. Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone to try it with yet, but the game is lots of fun in single player mode, so I can imagine it's good with more as well.
As regards Boom Blox, I have Bash Party. I think the point with this was that it was more of a multi-player thing than its predecessor, so it might be better to go with this one if you're going to be playing it with your boyfriend. My daughter and I have had lots of fun on it, at any rate.

I second world of goo and the bit trip series-but bit trip void is much better imho than the rest of 'em.

No recommendations for games here, but in regards to the New Super Mario Bros:the multi-player mode is really hard to play - you usually just end up killing each other. That said, it is an excellent single-player game

World of Goo however is a single player gameI think, but the pacing and point of the game does lend it to collaborative problem solving.
Tetris Party for the WiiWare offers two player co-operative Tetris as well as 4 player competitive Tetris. It is a grand time.

For the Virtual Console, I strongly recommend River City Ransom. My wife and I had a blast playing it together (BARF!), and it being a NES game, the price was right as well.

It can be hard, but it is a blast. A friend of ours got it, and we had about fifteen people trading off on the four-player mode. You do bump into each other but that's part of the fun, I found. It was the best time I had with a video game in a long time.

I don't know if ArtStyle's games are multi-player compatible, but they are hands down the most impressive downloadable Wiiware I've seen of late, along with BitBoy and that trip game thing mentioned upthread. ArtStyle's make me wanna bite my knuckles; I was sure I'd not mind not having a shiny new DSi but after playing their games on the Wii it makes me want yo play their DSi-only games sooo badly...

Also not Wiiware in the downloadable sense, but Rampage for the Wii and Pac Man Vs. for the Gamecube (hence Wii-ready too) are the best for multi player. Sooo much fun tearing down cities together and taking turns being Pac Man or the ghosts chasing each other!

Seconding River City Ransom. That's been my all-time favorite NES game for a LONG time. Also, you should check out the Toe Jam and Earl games for the Sega. Those are some classic two-player adventure games!

World of Goo is definitely multiplayer--as many people can play as you have remotes. It's tons of fun for skilled and unskilled players.

I have both Boom Blox and I would recommend the second one (Bash Party). Both are very good games, but BBBP has more games, better a better editing system for making your own levels, and a better system for downloading player made levels.
