[Can'tSeeTheForestFromTheTreesFilter II] Anybody here have their degree in Forestry? If so, any advice for somebody who has always wanted to go in that field of study, but was scared off due to the lack of jobs (student in the '80s)?

Advice, as in, "Hey, do it man," or, "Back off man, still ain't no jobs."

I have a soil science degree and used to have a lot of friends at the USDA and US Forest Service. I seem to recall every one of them has a story about how they totally lucked into their positions, where 500 people applied for a single $30k/year job. So I think funding for forestry jobs is still tighter than ever and jobs should be as scarce as they once were (probably worse, with this president).

My advice: don't make career decisions based on whether there are jobs or not.

Signed, Underpaid but Happy.

My sister is a forester here in Canada, and seems to have had not much trouble finding work (both government and private sector), but I imagine the situation is different in the US. You could check to see if there is a demand for foresters in some other part of the world, if you're interested in working abroad.

Don't forget, every decent sized city in the US needs an arborist.

Didn't even think about that. Especially the Canada angle. Thanks!

I think there are a reliable supply of decent forestry jobs here in my state (Victoria, Australia), particularly for the government, either production, or regulation.
