Mixological Mixtape?
July 6, 2009 3:36 PM   Subscribe

I'm giving a friend a copy of Everyday Drinking (an excellent book, belongs in everyone's library) for his birthday and would like to include a mixtape ... Give to me your finest songs about boozes, parties and/or hangovers!

I found this thread helpful, but am looking for songs with a happier vibe. Pretty well any era, any genre.

Cheers!

Well, the first to come to mind for me is Snoop's "Gin and Juice."

(erm, screwed up the link there, that's to a Spirit of the West cover...)

If you don't mind a little twang:
It Won't Hurt, Dwight Yoakam
If You've Got the Money, Lefty Frizzell
Sangria Wine, Jerry Jeff Walker

There Stands the Glass, by Webb Pierce isn't really a happy song on the face of it, but for some reason it makes me very happy to hear it.

Just off the top of my head:

Tequila
Red Red Wine
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

But whatever you do, the last track on the CD has to be Closing Time.

more twang, but Alcohol by Brad Paisley, Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off by Joe Nichols, Family Tradition by Hank Jr., Don't Come Home A drinkin' by Loretta Lynn. Funny, I don't listen to a lot of country...

Gin-Soaked Boy, The Divine Comedy
There's No Drinking After You're Dead, Paul Weller

The ultimate hangover song is "Sunday Morning Comin' Down", of course.

One of the happiest songs about drinking that I cam think of is "Drinking with the Legends" by the Bughouse 5.

Reverend Horton Heat, It's Martini Time and Baby I'm Drunk. The Reverend has a pretty good selection of drinking-related songs, but those are the two that come to mind first.

Andy M. Stewart & Manus Lunny, The Humours of Whiskey. There are many other bands that do this song, but accept no imitations. Go with the real Andy M.

Mostly on theme, the Asylum Street Spankers, Beer.

You didn't say what kind of music, so some shotgun guesses while trying to avoid anti-drinking songs...

Tequila Sunrise, The Eagles
Cigarettes & Alcohol, Oasis
Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett
The Pina Colada Song, Rupert Holmes
It's 5:00 Somewhere, Jimmy Buffett
Black Velvet, Alannah Myles
Beer Goggles, Smashmouth
10 Rounds with Jose Cuervo, Tracy Byrd
Drinking Again, Rod Stewart
Gin & Juice, Snoop Dog
The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me), Tom Waits

Come to think of it, you might as well just make a Tom Waits mixtape.

A bookend to the tape could be Archers of Loaf's "After the Last Laugh". It ends with a sing-a-long.

"After the last laugh has swollen and shut, when all that's left are the true beer-hall drunks!"

Katopotato beat me to the Dubliners, so my suggestion is Streams of Whiskey by the Pogues. Also the one with the chorus "I'm a free born man of the USA" (which I think is called "Body of an American") has some good drinking references.

Someone already got "Margaritaville," so I'll come in with Jimmy Buffet's "Boat Drinks" and "Why Don't We Get Drunk And Screw."

I actually also like the Gourds' cover of "Gin And Juice" better than Snoop's version. It's more upbeat, for one.

Afghan Whigs - Miles Iz Ded (chorus: "DON'T FORGET THE ALCOHOL".. dudes usually seem to dig this, right. god bless the Whigs but all their videos are awful.)

Serge Gainsbourg - Intoxicated Man (there is a Mick Harvey cover of this in English, which is pretty decent too)

OK, I can't believe no one has mentioned the tiny, perfect Yes I Guess They Oughta Name A Drink After You - John Prine (cover)

Oh I get drunk most every night
Seems like all we do is fight
The more I drink
The less I feel blue
Sometimes I feel like an awful fool
Spendin' my life on an old bar stool
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

If this date were to be our last
I'd never sit down this glass
It'd take all the booze in the world
To forget you
You've left my heart a vacant lot
I'll fill it with another shot

And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you

Looks like I had my fill
Guess I better pay my bill
When I started out I only meant to have a few
Someone just said that you left town
I better get a double round
And yes I guess they oughta name a drink after you
