Find me a nice and cheap hotel in Mykonos...

What is a great hotel on Mykonos that won't break the bank ?

We are travelling to Mykonos for a wedding July 24-27th. Having checked out the prices of hotels online, many of them break my budget.

We'd like to pay $100-$175 / night yet still have a sea view and a balcony if possible. Caveat is it MUST be clean and extra points if it looks like a typical Greek villa ( white walls, blue accents )

Here's Lonely Planet's list of reviewed hotels. Most of them seem to have the website for the hotel included in the full review. I didn't stay in Mykonos when I was there, but I got the impression that, especially in high season, you aren't going to find a room in town for that cheap, with a sea-view, balcony, etc.. That said, I didn't see hardly anything that DIDN'T have the typical Greek villa look, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. You might try Hotel Elysium as its not located down in the main town area - might be a bit cheaper.

I lived and worked on Mykonos from March to October one season many years ago.

Late July is very busy. Definitely make sure to book in advance -- the island will be swamped with mostly European visitors. I can't recommend any specific hotels after all this time, but I would strongly recommend getting a place to stay in the village itself. Anywhere else isn't really worth it.

It's pretty hard to go too far wrong, in general, staying in the village, and you will (or would have, 20 years ago) almost certainly end up in a place with the canonical Cyclades look. I don't really know what prices are like these days -- I'm shocked in general how expensive travel has become these days -- but my feeling is that even in high season on Mykonos you should be able to get something reasonable but not upmarket in your target range. But book quickly -- it will be packed in late July!

Until I got a job there in '89, I stayed in a bed&breakfast with a lovely grandmotherly lady running it, right beside the windmills in town, and it was dirt cheap and quite pleasant, even for a destitute backpacker. Places like that may still exist, and if you can find a good one, are an even better experience than a standard hotel in some ways.
