Computing makes sense to me, until they do something completely stupid (or too fucking clever)

Dinovo Edge keyboard works fine in OS (Win7 x64 RC1 7100), certain keystrokes in Metafilter turn into extended keys (ie., é is (slash) `` (is shift comma), < (is backslash) ? (is shift-6). It`s a really simply thing I`m not getting, rightÉ (that accented E should have been a query). Or let me rephrase that; am I`m just being stupid and there`s a really simple fix for this and could you please tell me what that simple thing isÉ

More info:

Win7 64 as only OS. Everything worked. Logitech DiNovo keyboard worked fine. Other than that it didn`t keep connected between shutdownéhibernate. Got in contact with Logitech, they sent me a new unit. Replaced old unit with new unit. NOW it doesn`t work.

Headaches galore. Couldn`t recognize new unit in different USB plug, Logitech mouse stopped working, &c&c. Eventually got everything to be recognized again (except; keyboard wireless USB receiver only works on front USB ports and nowhere else - argh! but I can deal).

So everything`s fine until I post comments on MeFi. The keys work fine within windows programs (notepad, word) but not in Firefox 3.

SuggestionsÉ

If you suggest that I do a fresh install of RC1, please also suggest how I can export the bulk of the user customized settings and import them into a new install.

Thanks!

Response by poster: I double checked; keyboard is set to use US English. No difference if I change it to English (Canadian) or if I change my physical location to `United Stated.`

I'm a litle confused here. Are you saying that the keyboard doesn't work on metafilter, but works everywhere else. Or that it works in most applications but not the web browser? Or does it just not work at all and you had to have it replaced?

If it's only not working in one application, I would guess that you somehow triggered a diffrent keyboard layout and you might be able to remove it under the keyboard control panel. In vista, you'd go to Clock Language and Region / Change Keyboards or other input methods / and make sure US english is the only one installed. Close your browser first.

If it's an actual hardware problem, it seems like it would effect everything

I hate wireless input devices. More trouble then they're worth

er, on preview, I see you looked at the keyboard settings. Make sure all the other keyboards are uninstalled. It could be a hardware problem though. But are you only having this problem in one application and not others?

Other people with a similar problem here makes me think it might not be the keyboard itself to blame.

I also gather, from this documentation, that Windows has a setting called "language for non-unicode programs" - at least, that setting is present on XP, in control panel's 'regional and language options', under the 'advanced' tab.

I don't know if Firefox is a "non-unicode program" but it can't hurt to check the setting if you can find it.
