What type of bird is this?

I saw this bird this morning in the bottle brush in my back yard. It kept giving out a single "tweet" every ten seconds or so. One of the photos is an action shot, but I've never seen such a flashy bird where I live - Los Angeles. Does anyone know what it is?

Possibly an American goldfinch? There are pictures on whatbird.com.

Best answer: Looks like an oriole?

Listen to the bird call on this link and see if this is what it sounded like. Hooded Oriole

Yup, oriole. Amazing color, isn't it?

Response by poster: It is amazing. It was a male, I think, so a bit orange. I'm fairly certain that it was making the "wheet" noise, but I live in a canyon and my yard is literally a bird paradise so I was hearing several calls at once. Thanks for helping me out!
