And all shall be whale?

WhaleFilter: My fiancé is trying to find a film he vaguely remembers about whales.
He can't remember if the whales are orca or some other sort of whale. At any rate, the protagonists in the film (who are human) have to go to the whales' graveyard at some point. The "dying grounds," or whale graveyard, is somewhere in the Arctic Ocean. Fiancé thinks the movie was made in the 1960s or '70s. We've just watched Orca, unfortunately (it was awful), but that's not it. Does anybody have any idea what movie he's thinking of? I'm beginning to think this film only exists in his imagination, or perhaps he's conflating Orca with some other movie?

Response by poster: AskMe wins again! My fiancé thanks you, Paragon; and now, I fear, I can predict how we will be spending our Valentine's Day evening....

Just so you know, the first hit on Google for the search term "whale graveyard" is that movie.
