Gym in Boston that doesn't suck?

Can anyone recommend a gym in Boston (near 02110) that doesn't require a contract (ie. month to month payments) and isn't awful?

The Y has month/month rates (I think @ $40/mo) although there is a signup fee. The facility in Cambridge is supposed to be really nice, in Central Square. I used to go to the BSC there in Central, but I did have a contract, I believe. The BSC facilities are fantastic, though, I really liked that gym a lot. When I worked in Central Square many of my coworkers went to the Y and said it was very nice.

I'm not sure what Y facilities are closer to where you are, although if you're close to the red line, the Cambridge Y is right in front of the Central T stop.

I'm a member of the Curley Community Center at L St and Columbia Rd in South Boston. Although it doesn't meet either of your constraints*, it's cheap enough ($70 per year) that you might not care.

* Although it depends what, exactly, you mean by awful. It's a long ways from something like Boston Sports Club, but it's got a well-stocked weight room, a few dozen okay treadmills and ellipticals, decent spinning classes, and a gym. No pool or racquetball or anything like that.

Hold on a moment, I know you in real life.

By comparison it won't be as cheap as others, but if you're serious about fitness try CrossFit Boston.

Not so much if you're just looking for a place to walk in and do a regular kind of routine.
