Where to stay in Denver?

Visiting Denver in late August -- where should I stay?
I'm taking a week to visit Colorado and parts of Wyoming later this month. I'll be hiking and camping in the Rockies for much of the week, but I'll also have a couple of days to see Denver.
Specifically, I'm looking for a place to stay on Thu Aug 21 after the My Morning Jacket show at Red Rocks, and Fri Aug 22 after a day of exploring Denver on foot. I'll fly home to San Francisco on Saturday afternoon. I definitely want to find a place with some local/independent charm -- not a Motel 6. Any tips? (If you have food and beer suggestions too, even better!)
Thanks!

Just stayed at the Hotel Monico--a boutique chain that is nice and often has internet special rates. One of their specialties is that they are very dog friendly. They even have a dog ambassador that is usually there.
As far as beer, my friend from that area swears by Odell's 90 shilling. And I must concur, its really quite good.

You might have picked a bad time to be in Denver for Denver. At then end of August (25th) is the Democratic National Convention, so hotel rooms might be hard to find.

I love the Magnolia Hotel, a really nice boutiquey hotel with chocolate chip cookies and happy hour every night.
See this post for some good food/beer suggestions.
By the by...a little thing called the Democratic National Convention is happening mere days after you leave...not sure how that is affecting hotel occupancy before the DNC.

I live in Denver and have a spare bedroom you could use. I'd prefer you treat this as a last resort, as we'll be traveling right before then and have family visiting right after. But let me know if you can't find any alternatives so close to the DNC.

The Hotel Teatro is a gorgeous little hotel, with tons of character and a very luxurious feeling.

Response by poster: The DNC...right. Where have I been?

Thanks, that's very generous of you, but I hope it doesn't come to that! :)

I was just looking at AirBed and Breakfast and remembered this question. Looks like there are a lot of places to choose from in Denver.

As for food and beer, there are many options. If you are looking for good beer primary, there is falling rock, great divide brewery, bull and bush, Breckenridge brewery, and Wynkoop. I am sure there are places i am leaving out but they are all good, all but falling rock are brewery/brewpubs and all but great divide serve a good amount of food. I would say Wynkoop is the best balance of good food and good beer.
