Why won't my desk chair recline?

My desk chair has locked in an upright position- it won't recline at all. I've noticed this happening before- eventually I'll try to lean back and it'll go right back. But what causes this, and is there anything specific I can do to get it to recline properly?

Best answer: Assuming it's a fairly standard office chair, there's normally a lever used to adjust the height. Pushing this lever in (along the direction of the rod) locks the chair into an upright position; pulling it out enables the chair to tilt back and forth.

It could be that your lever is neither fully in or fully out.
