fly to seattle, get a nintendo employee to take to the company store, fly back to dallas. I spent countless mornings at stores waiting for them to unpack the week's shipment, to see if they'd gotten any, before I found out I knew someone who knew someone. 24 hours later, I had mine.

At this hour, unlikely; when a store does get a shipment, they're still usually sold out in the morning. But, like jmd82 says, start calling: Gamestop, Toys R Us, Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Walmart, etc. etc. etc...

Half an hour has gone by since you posted this question. Assuming that you've already exhausted the electronics stores (big-box places, plus smaller used/secondhand stores) in the phonebook, the next group of businesses to start calling would probably be pawnshops.

Call call call. My mother works at a store adjacent to a GameStop, so the odds were in her favor. She called and flat-out told them, "Hi, I'm looking for a Wii, and I'm going to call you every single morning to see if you've gotten them." Two weeks later, she got one.

I got my Wii in April by waking up early on a Sunday to check the newspaper inserts. The Circuit City ad said "Wii have them in stock!" and had detailed instructions: The first 10 people in line at 9:00 would get vouchers to purchase a Wii when the store opens at 10:00. I got there at 8:00, waited an hour with a few other people, got a voucher and then a Wii.
Sorry if you meant "today" literally - because in that case this answer doesn't help.

Sorry to hijack but why, more than a year after the release, are there still shortages? Is Nintendo having manufacturing issues? Does keeping them scarce create some benefit for Nintendo that I can't see?

There are lots of theories on this. 1.) They don't waste money building out manufacturing capacity that would go idle at some point once the majority of the demand was satisfied. 2.) Scarcity increases the desirability of things. 3.) The amount of free (and mostly positive) publicity that Nintendo has gotten from the scarcity is priceless.
While, I don't believe that they purposely had this plan all along, I do think that they realize that keeping the supply down is in their benefit.

The question becomes "how far are you willing to drive and how much are you willing to spend?"
Out here in Arlington there's a spot called Entertainmart on Cooper St.
They never seem to have a shortage of Wiis, but maybe that's because they sell them for upwards of $300. If you can stand a 30-minute drive and that price, it's probably your best bet.

My local Gamestop (in the sprawling metropolis of Billings, Montana) seems to be the best bet for the last several months. They told me they were keeping them in stock pretty consistently. Perhaps your Dallas Gamestop is a good bet.

Is this only a problem in the United States? There was a Wii shortage here in Ireland before and during the Christmas period, but since mid-January they've been widely available once again.
