Pre-bootloader-4.6 iPhones still in stores?

Are iPhones with the old (not 4.6) bootloader still on store shelves in the US? If so, is it possible to identify such phones from their packaging, for example, by examining a serial number? Hoping to ask my US-based folks to get me an iPhone or two, but keen for units that can be software unlocked for use in Australia.

Once you ask someone at the Apple Store about serial numbers, they automatically give you one with the latest firmware - I know, as I worked at one over the holidays.
