I'm trying to use smartftp or filezilla to get files on my computer to my website. I use A Small Orange for hosting and I can connect to the servers using the clients, but I'm not sure what I need to do then to get my site up. Please help.

When I enter my domain name in my browser it still just puts up the same crappy page I somehow was able put on the site (by some miracle apparently) a few months ago. I can't figure out how to do it again, and its getting unbelievably frustrating. There is a public_html folder on the server that I believe I am supposed to upload my index.html page to, which I have done but nothing happens. I have even deleted the old page that was in that folder on the server, but the page still comes up when I go to the website in my browser. Please help.

It sounds like you may be looking in the wrong directory. Can you post a comment describing the directory structure you see, when you log in via your FTP client?

Response by poster: Sure, here are the folders in the remote site folder which is labeled /:

.cpanel
.cpanel-datastore
access logs
etc.
logs
mail
public_ftp
public_html
tmp
www
those are the folders, then there are 6 files, a couple of which are:
.bash_logout
.lastlogin

The public_html folder is usually right, but not always. It may be a folder inside public_html. Also look for www, web, or just plain public.

And make sure you really refresh your browser. :)

Should have previewed: try the www folder.

If it's an apache server, you can avoid the trial and error by finding the line

DocumentRoot "/usr/local/apache/some place" in the file httpd.conf

this'll tell you exactly where to edit/modify.
(trial and error could easily be quicker, but FWIW.)

I use ASO. Check that there aren't any other index.* files under public_html. Make sure your browser's cache is wiped by holding Shift while clicking refresh. If all else fails, just ask ASO support. When I asked them about getting ssh access, they literally replied within 5 minutes.
