Trying to find a book I forgot about...

I've been looking for a book forever that involves some punk kid, a farm, and a massive golem-like creature slowly marching in the night toward said punk kid's doom.
I've asked on a couple other less trafficked sites with no luck. I read this story in middle school about 10 years ago: It takes place in some relatively sheep farm-filled English-based country (I want to say maybe Australia or Ireland). It involves a boy exploring a construction site around his farm one day and finding a strange rock, which he promptly carves his name into. When he comes back the next day, the rock has moved a good distance and the construction equipment around the site are all crushed and mangled. He realizes later on that it's a creature that is slowly moving its way toward his home.
That's about all I can remember, aside from the fact that it's definitely a young adult book. If anyone thinks this sounds familiar, please give me something. Much appreciated!

Best answer: No idea, but I suggest the Internet Public Library's Ask a question service. It's staffed by librarians and library school students and they tend to be remarkably good with questions of this type.

Response by poster: Just some average kid who likes to write on things, from what I remember. Like myself.
Not punk kid of the mohawked, "oi!" sort.

The Fiction-L list is good for this sort of thing, too.

Best answer: Sounds like The Nargun and the Stars... scared the life out of me when it was read on TV (Jackonory) when I was a kid. Just found this study guide for it.

Response by poster: Nice, I'm pretty sure that's it! Thanks so much, you have no idea how long I've been trying to track that down.
